1. Start with how Thai customers decide
Thailand is a mobile-first market. Most of your audience will discover, compare and often buy on a phone, frequently inside an app rather than a browser. Three habits shape almost every campaign:
- Conversation before commitment. Customers expect to ask a question — on LINE, Facebook Messenger or by phone — before buying anything non-trivial.
- Social proof from people, not brands. Reviews, creators (often called KOLs) and community discussion on forums such as Pantip carry weight.
- Marketplaces as the default shop. For many consumer products, Shopee, Lazada and TikTok Shop are where the purchase happens, even when discovery started elsewhere.
2. The channel map
| Channel | Typical role | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Google Search (Thai + English) | Capturing existing demand; high-intent leads | Thai keyword research must use real Thai queries, not translations |
| LINE (Official Account + Ads) | Customer conversations, retention, repeat sales | Needs a Thai-speaking person answering chats |
| Facebook & Instagram | Reach, retargeting, community, Messenger sales | Pixel and conversions API need PDPA-compliant consent |
| TikTok | Discovery and creator-led content; TikTok Shop for commerce | Creative fatigue is fast; native-style video beats polished ads |
| YouTube | Consideration, product explanation, reviews | Thai voice-over or subtitles, not English-only |
| Shopee / Lazada / TikTok Shop | Transactions for consumer goods | Sales happen outside your own analytics |
| Pantip and communities | Research and word of mouth | Covert promotion is easily spotted and backfires |
| B2B, English-speaking managers | Narrower Thai-speaking audience than in Western markets |
No brand needs all of these on day one. A typical entry sequence is: Thai-language website and search presence, LINE Official Account, then paid social and creators once you know which messages convert.
3. Language: Thai first, English second
Bangkok has many English speakers, but most Thai consumers search, read reviews and buy in Thai. Practical implications:
- Write in Thai, don't just translate. Machine-translated pages read as foreign and convert poorly. Have Thai copy written or edited by a native speaker who knows the category.
- Research Thai keywords directly. Thai has no spaces between words, many loanwords have several accepted spellings, and people mix Thai and English in a single query.
- Use proper bilingual site structure. Separate URLs for Thai and English pages, linked with
hreflang, rather than a language toggle that swaps text on one URL. - Mind the calendar. Thai dates often use the Buddhist Era (2026 CE is 2569 BE), including in searches and documents.
4. Payments shape conversion
Thai shoppers expect local payment options. PromptPay (the national QR and phone-number payment system) and mobile banking apps are everyday tools, cards are common, and cash on delivery is still important in some categories and regions. E-wallets such as TrueMoney appear in some checkouts. Which options you show, in what order, and how the QR step behaves on a phone all affect conversion — see Thai checkout patterns.
5. Seasonality you should plan around
- Double-date marketplace sales (for example 9.9, 10.10, 11.11 and 12.12) drive large promotional spikes for consumer goods.
- Songkran (Thai New Year, mid-April) and the surrounding holiday period change travel, retail and media behaviour.
- Year-end and New Year gifting and promotions.
- Other public and religious holidays shift from year to year; check the official calendar when you plan campaigns.
6. Legal basics: PDPA and advertising rules
Thailand's Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA) has been fully in force since June 2022. For marketing, that means a clear privacy notice, a lawful basis for processing (usually consent for analytics and advertising cookies), and an easy way to withdraw consent. We explain the analytics side in PDPA Thailand for analytics and implement it as a consent setup service. Some categories — health products, food supplements, cosmetics claims, alcohol, financial products — have additional advertising restrictions; check them with a Thai adviser before you write ad copy.
7. Measurement: decide what "working" means first
Thai customer journeys cross channels that do not share data: a TikTok video, a LINE chat, a Shopee purchase. Before spending, agree on:
- What counts as a conversion for each channel (purchase, qualified chat, call, marketplace order).
- How each one will be recorded — GA4 for your site, LINE Tag and chat tagging for LINE, marketplace reports for Shopee and Lazada.
- One weekly view that brings them together, even if it starts as a spreadsheet.
Our GA4 & analytics service covers how to set this up properly.
8. Where to get reliable market numbers
We deliberately do not quote user statistics here, because they date quickly and are often repeated without a source. For current figures, use primary sources: the National Statistical Office of Thailand and the Electronic Transactions Development Agency (ETDA) for internet use, the platforms' own advertising tools for reachable audience sizes, and Google Trends and Google Ads Keyword Planner for search demand in Thai.
9. A sensible first 90 days
- Weeks 1–3: Thai keyword and competitor research, measurement plan, PDPA consent, Thai-language landing pages.
- Weeks 3–6: LINE Official Account live, Google Ads on high-intent searches, conversion tracking verified.
- Weeks 6–12: Paid social and creator tests based on what search taught you; SEO content production; first CRO improvements.
This is roughly how we approach market entry work, and how we built the sites in our own Thailand portfolio.
